Glass, blown nightly · Walcot St, Bath
Blownat dusk.Yoursby noon.
LEHR is a working hot shop in a Walcot Street arch. Watch glass leave the furnace from a bench close enough to feel it — or take the pipe, and blow a piece that sleeps the night in our annealing oven.
01 · Still warm
This week's pull.
Six pieces left the furnace this week. Scroll draws them out of the dark the way glass leaves the pipe — still joined, necking into threads as they part. Every one is for sale in the arch, or made again to order.
-
Overspill Smoke glass, one amber swirl caught at the rim — poured a breath too far, kept on purpose. -
First Breath The first full breath down the pipe, held. Deep amber fading to smoke at the neck. -
Night Round Clear crystal over a core of trapped amber threads. Faceted stopper, ground to seat by hand. -
Undertow A ribbon of glass folded on itself and caught while it was still deciding. It will not be made twice. -
Held Light Rippled smoke glass around a warm filament — the furnace, scaled down to hang over a table. -
Second Pass Stout, punted, heavier than they look. Made in pairs because the second one always comes out truer.
02 · Take the pipe
One evening.
One piece.
No experience, no theory hour. You sit down at a bench two metres from 1,120°C, and you leave having blown glass.
- 01
Gather
Your glass comes off the furnace on the end of a steel pipe — a slow orange gather the size of a plum. We steady it; you turn it.
- 02
Shape
Breath, gravity and a wet block of cherry wood. It moves like honey and listens to none of you — that's the good part.
- 03
Sleep
Your piece spends the night in the lehr — the slow-cooling oven we're named after — dropping from 480°C to the shelf by morning. Collect from noon, or we post it anywhere in the UK.
